Bakar BioEnginuity Hub has been honored with the prestigious Design Award of Excellence in the 2023 Modernism in America Awards, presented by Docomomo US. On BBH, Jury chair Barbara Bestor commented, “Despite all of the challenges in restoring Brutalist buildings, especially those with large interior spaces such as this, they prevailed with great success. The preservation community rallied to save it, and the project team developed a smart strategy for seismic upgrades without losing the interior atrium. It is a perfect example of what can be done when there is a will behind it.”
In her statement, Docomomo US Executive Director Liz Waytkus emphasized the symbiotic relationship between creative design and preservation, highlighting the imperative to protect modern architecture from demolition or insensitive alterations.
