Richard
Christiani

The MBH family lost one of our own members on December 26th.  Rick Christiani has passed after a long, valiant and courageous fight against cancer.

For those of us who have known Rick for many years his memory will be one of an imposing physical human being, solid and formidable on first impression.

But very quickly that first impression evolves and Rick’s embracing personality and quick wit allows you to form a completely different impression, we’ve all seen that twinkle in his eye.

In the office, Rick was approachable, on any subject.  Rick was a mentor to the entire spectrum of MBH, no matter how junior or senior, there was always an insight that he could share that would shed new light on whatever problem you were grappling with.

Professionally, Rick is a product of UC Berkeley’s architecture program of the 1970’s, a time when the campus was alive with rapid social change, free speech and anti-war protests.

At Wurster Hall, the mood was different.

There was clear recognition of the impact that future architects will have on the environment and the influence our profession will have on the future of our planet.

Rick embraced the importance of truly understanding and resolving all of the issues affecting his projects, while developing a profound sense of the Northern California design aesthetic.

Rick was also an accomplished back country skier, a mountain climber who relished the risks of heading into the unknown, the thrill of a physical challenge.

Quite a contrast to his attitude towards architecture.

For this was a much more careful and nuanced approach.  Rick just happened to be that unique architect who combined highly tuned design skills with the technical expertise and knowledge of any superintendent that he would encounter on his jobsites.

Rick could see the big picture and his design sensitivity towards developing an approach to regionalism was first acknowledged as a young designer at Fisher Friedman and then refined as the founder of Christiani Johnson.

Our paths crossed often through our careers, socially and professionally as we shared a client, The Emerald Fund and as we shared a great project, The Village at Petrini Place.

MBH is so very fortunate to have had Rick Christiani in our world.  He taught us valuable lessons about our craft at the same time he also showed us what really defines a true gentleman: kind and patient, honest and respectful, modest and self-aware.

The entire MBH family mourns this loss and at the same time, we celebrate a triumphant life that was full of joy, love and accomplishments, and who made MBH stronger.

To Rick’s wife of 50 years, Linnea, and the entire Christiani family, we extend our deepest sympathies and hope that the memories of this amazing man will lighten their hearts and will continue to bring smiles to their faces forever.
