How Diverse Perspectives Strengthen Design Leadership: Reflections from MBH’s Women Principals

In celebration of Women’s History Month, MBH hosted its first Women Principals Panel, convening the firm’s five women Principals for an open discussion about leadership, career growth, the challenges they have navigated, and the path they hope to help create for future generations.


One theme emerged consistently throughout the conversation: stronger leadership and stronger design are shaped by diversity of perspective.


While each panelist’s journey to leadership was unique, what stood out most was not how different their paths were structurally, but the breadth of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives they brought to their roles.


At MBH, we believe those differences make teams stronger.


Leadership Is Built Through Experience


Leadership is not shaped by title alone. It is shaped by the experiences, challenges, and perspectives professionals accumulate over time.


For the women on MBH’s leadership team, those experiences include:


  • Navigating different cultural and professional backgrounds

  • Building careers while balancing parenthood and caregiving

  • Returning to the workforce after career pauses

  • Growing through economic downturns and industry disruption

  • Taking on unfamiliar responsibilities and new business challenges

  • Learning across disciplines, teams, and client contexts


These experiences build resilience, adaptability, empathy, and judgment, all of which are essential to effective leadership. They also prepare professionals to recognize and seize opportunity when it appears.


As one panelist observed, “Luck is when opportunity meets preparation.” Advancement rarely follows a perfect formula. More often, it comes from consistently building the skills, perspective, and readiness to step forward when the right opportunity presents itself.


Better Leaders Bring Broader Perspectives


In design, perspective matters.


The environments we create are shaped by countless decisions, from how users move through space to how operations and experience are balanced to how environments respond to real human needs.


Leaders with varied backgrounds and lived experiences often bring broader context to those decisions. They are more likely to:


  • Understand challenges from multiple vantage points

  • Identify considerations others may overlook

  • Approach problems with greater nuance and empathy

  • Challenge assumptions and conventional thinking

  • Foster more rigorous and thoughtful discussion


That breadth of thinking strengthens both leadership and design.


Diversity of Experience Drives Better Outcomes


While conversations around diversity often focus on representation, the value of diversity extends beyond visibility alone. Teams composed of individuals with different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives tend to produce stronger dialogue and more rigorous problem-solving. Homogeneous teams often move quickly toward consensus. Diverse teams ask harder questions. That friction can be uncomfortable, but when grounded in shared values, it often leads to better solutions.


In a design industry where nuance, empathy, and strategic thinking are essential, that difference matters.


Expanding the Definition of Leadership


One of the clearest takeaways from the panel was that there is no single blueprint for leadership. Strong leaders emerge in different ways, through different experiences, and with different strengths. What matters is not following one prescribed path. What matters is the perspective, judgment, and leadership capacity built along the way.


Building Better Firms Through Broader Perspectives


When firms value diverse backgrounds and experiences in leadership, they build stronger teams, more resilient organizations, and better outcomes for clients. They also create space for future leaders to see that there is more than one way to lead.


At MBH, we believe great leadership is strengthened by the range of perspectives brought to the table. Because in design, the strongest outcomes rarely come from everyone thinking the same way. They come from different voices challenging one another to think more deeply.



MBH’s Women Principals Panel offered an opportunity to reflect on the experiences, perspectives, and leadership journeys that continue to shape the firm. It also reinforced an enduring truth: better design begins with broader perspectives.
