MBH Becomes Nationally-Certified MBE
Great news to share! MBH Architects has officially been certified as a Minority-Owned Business Enterprise (MBE), and we couldn't be more proud! This isn't just another plaque on our wall—it's a genuine expression of who we are as an organization. Our certification celebrates the rich diversity that has always been a core part of our firm's DNA, embodying our genuine commitment to creating an inclusive workplace where every perspective is valued and every voice can be heard. More than a formal recognition, this certification represents our ongoing journey of empowerment, collaboration, and breaking down barriers. We're not checking boxes; we're building a culture where diverse talents and perspectives aren't just welcomed—they're the very fuel that drives our innovation and success!
YEARS OF ARCHITECTURE
AND CAMARADERIE
Thirty-five years of great architecture—what a journey! On October 2nd, we celebrated the remarkable legacy that began with three visionary founders: John McNulty, Shawn Briskman, and Dennis Heath. From their bold entrepreneurial spirit in 1989 to our current status as a globally recognized architecture firm, we've transformed from a small, passionate team to a dynamic organization of over 200 professionals spanning five international offices. We celebrated in true MBH style with a Spirit Week that was equal parts nostalgia and pure excitement! From tropical-themed shirts that transported us to sunnier climes to showcasing our MBH pride through spirited attire, our team came together and captured the energy and creativity that have defined our firm since day one. We're not just marking time—we're celebrating a legacy of innovation, collaboration, and groundbreaking design that has served numerous Fortune 500 clients and brought extraordinary spaces to life around the world. Here's to the incredible journey that brought us here, and to the exciting chapters still waiting to be written!
THE DENVER TEAM IS ON THE MOVE
Denver, get ready! Our team is buzzing with excitement about our brand new home at 1708 Wynkoop St., nestled in the heart of LoDo. This isn't just an office move; it's a strategic leap into Denver's rapidly evolving design landscape. Just steps from Union Station, we're perfectly positioned to dive deeper into retail, restaurant, multi-family, workspace, and laboratory sectors. Studio Director Joe Irwin and Principal Dimple Manghani have orchestrated a move that's more than a change of address—it's a declaration of our commitment to growth, creativity, and becoming an even more integral part of Denver's innovative design community!
THE NEW YORK TEAM PAINTED THE TOWN RED
Talk about making an entrance! After a few unexpected detours courtesy of office moves and that pesky global pandemic, our New York team finally threw the welcome party we've been itching to host. And boy, did we deliver! Our open house was a vibrant celebration that perfectly showcased why MBH is anything but ordinary. Clients, partners, and friends got an insider's look at our dynamic company culture, explored our extensive project portfolio, and—let's be honest—absolutely devoured a spread of food that was as impressive as our architectural designs. It was more than just an event; it was a statement that we've arrived, we're bold, and we're ready to transform the New York architectural landscape, one incredible space at a time!
NOTEWORTHY
PROJECTS
Cue the confetti! This year, we completed MBC Biolabs at 135 Mississippi St., a century-old industrial building in San Francisco’s Potrero Hill that’s now buzzing with life—science, that is! Once a historic maker space, it’s been transformed into a sleek, cutting-edge lab and office hub for MBC Biolabs. Think high-tech labs, an all-hands patio with bi-fold doors, and even copper countertops—because science deserves some style. With its flexible design and prime location near UCSF Mission Bay, this space is all set to spark the next big breakthroughs. A round of applause to our team for bringing modern magic to a historic gem!
We are proud to have completed the Vivalon Healthy Aging Campus, a transformative project that reimagines the senior living experience in Marin County. This innovative campus represents a comprehensive approach to healthy aging, featuring meticulously designed spaces that prioritize wellness, creativity, and community connection. From the state-of-the-art fitness studio to the vibrant art spaces and adaptable learning environments, our design goes far beyond traditional expectations. With thoughtfully crafted spaces that accommodate diverse needs, the Vivalon campus stands as a proof of our commitment to creating environments that support and celebrate life at every stage. This project embodies our vision of architecture as a powerful tool for enhancing human experience and well-being.
Talk about a game-changer! Our latest project at 250 California Drive isn't just a building—it's a love letter to Burlingame's rich urban history. Nestled right next to the Caltrain Station, this four-story marvel is redefining downtown with its stunning blend of industrial charm and cutting-edge design. From the hyper-realistic brick façade that pays homage to early 20th-century architecture to the mind-blowing underground parking system (the first of its kind on the West Coast!), we've created something truly extraordinary. Designed by Principal Andres Grechi, the building is a masterful dance between historical reverence and modern innovation, complete with a beautifully preserved 1917 advertising mural that whispers stories of the city's past. It's more than a building—it's a testament to how great design can transform urban spaces and honor community heritage!
The news of the passing of Phil Lesh, a founding member of the Grateful Dead, resonated deeply among fans and musicians worldwide, and especially here at MBH. We feel incredibly privileged to honor Phil’s memory through the completion of Phil Lesh Music Studio at Eastside College Preparatory School. This 900-square-foot creative sanctuary, in collaboration with the Good Tidings Foundation, is more than a vibrant tribute to a musical pioneer's enduring spirit. Just miles from where the Grateful Dead first started, the studio pulses with psychedelic energy, from its tie-dye wallpaper to its vibrant color palette. We've crafted a space that transforms loss into hope, offering students in East Palo Alto a place to explore, create, and be inspired by the transformative power of music. With custom millwork, dedicated practice areas, and a Hall of Fame wall celebrating musical history, this studio ensures Phil's revolutionary spirit continues to resonate with future generations.
Pop culture, meet architectural magic! Our latest project at Stonestown Galleria has transformed POP MART into the ultimate collector's paradise, and the grand opening proved it. Lines snaking out the door tell the whole story—we've created more than just a retail space; we've crafted a destination that captures the energy and excitement of this globally trending brand. With design that elevates the shopping experience and creates an irresistible environment for collectible enthusiasts, this project is proof that great architecture can turn a store into a must-visit destination. The crowds say it all: when design meets passion, something extraordinary happens!
In our collaboration with Crate & Barrel at Broadway Plaza in Walnut Creek, CA, we didn't just design a showroom—we crafted an elegant space that speaks the brand's design language fluently, taking the project from initial concept through construction. By meticulously following Crate & Barrel's established design aesthetic, we created a retail environment that's both sophisticated and inviting, where every detail tells a story of thoughtful design. It's more than a store; it's a showcase of how architecture can elevate the shopping experience!
This year we wrapped up the Bay Area's first JARS dessert location at Bay Street in Emeryville, and it's everything delicious dreams are made of. Working with celebrity chef Fabio Viviani, we've created a space that's as playful and innovative as the dessert concept itself. It's a culinary playground that captures the fun and indulgence of JARS' memorable dessert experience. From concept to completion, we transformed a space that invites guests to dive into a world of portable, decadent treats that are as visually stunning as they are delectable. Who says architecture can't be as sweet as dessert?
Hope has a new home! Nestled along the Los Angeles County coastline, Beacon Landing is more than just housing—it's a beacon of hope for community members seeking stable, supportive homes. As the first of five modular developments stemming from LA's $40 million HHH Innovation Challenge Award, Beacon Landing represents a bold step forward in addressing our housing crisis. Working with Abode Communities, we've created a welcoming haven where residents can access vital on-site services while building their futures. With half the units designed for those experiencing mental or developmental challenges and half dedicated to general affordable housing, Beacon Landing shows how innovative construction methods and inclusive design can support, uplift, and strengthen our community.
