MBH PARTNERS WITH TARGET CORPORATION TO DESIGN NEW URBAN CONCEPT

Target Redondo Beach, CaliforniaIn October, two MBH designed Target Stores with an innovative new approach opened in Southern California. The new design allows a much larger prototype store to be incorporated into a much smaller site. This new concept will allow Target to pursue sites in denser urban areas.

The 153,288 s.f., Redondo Beach store has a two-story illuminated glass atrium / lobby with an elevated sales floor over ground level parking. The sales area is on the second floor with parking underneath and on site outside the building with a total of 604 spaces. The main entry is on the first level from the front and the parking. The exterior elevation of the building consists of a red Target tower; a glass curtain wall encloses the main entry lobby. Popped out Concrete and cement plaster break up the linier look of the building.

The Lobby has one guest elevator, one up and one down guest escalator, and one down shopping cart escalator. The shopping cart elevator can act as backup guest elevator and is located at the front red tower which acts as the focal point of the store. The lobby is enclosed with a glass curtain wall system to provide a feel of a large open space for the guests. A monumental stair connects the first and second floor. The second floor also is home to the food services section with a Starbuck coffee overlooking the lobby below and to the outside of the building.

The stores are located at 1601 Kingsdale Avenue, Redondo Beach, California and 8999 North Balboa Boulevard., Northridge, California (at the intersection of Balboa and Nordhoff).
