Habitat for Humanity / Rebuilding Together Oakland
The last few years, MBH has participated in a number or work days for a variety of non-profit organizations. Last year was no different as nine people came out to play in the sawdust with power tools and hammers on a gorgeous sunny Saturday on a Habitat for Humanity job site in West Oakland. The job site consisted of 12 houses, all in various stages of construction. In the morning, we broke into two groups and worked on the porches of two of the houses. After a short break for a brown bag lunch that was graciously provided for us by a local church, some of us went back to work on the porches, and others moved inside to help finish trim work. As the day concluded, we all agreed that the job site was well organized, well staffed, and while it had been tiring, it had been a good day for a great cause.
Rebuilding Together is a non-profit organization that seeks to help low-income elderly and disabled folks live dignified, independent lives by repairing their homes, often adding safety measures to dangerously dilapidated residences. They have also expanded their services to include community centers. Last year, 25 homes and three community centers were renovated with the help of over 2,000 volunteers through their two main programs, the April Rebuilding and the September West Oakland Block Building Programs.
This year, MBH will graciously continue their support of Rebuilding Together Oakland, contributing both money and volunteers for the Block Building Program.
